Through this capacity-building initiative, the African Women Alliance of Waterloo Region (AWAWR) strengthened its ability to advance gender equity and address gender-based violence (GBV) within the African community in Waterloo Region.

Key achievements include delivering 13 culturally responsive training sessions for staff, volunteers, and youth; convening three stakeholder roundtables to strengthen cross-sector collaboration; and launching safe spaces such as Sisters Circle and a youth-led HIV and GBV prevention program.

AWAWR also developed a multicultural strategy, enhanced its data management systems, and created culturally informed resources, including an advocacy video,  to better support survivors and strengthen community response to GBV. This work has significantly enhanced AWAWR’s capacity to empower African women, foster collaboration, and build safer, more inclusive communities.
